May 28th, 2009The fruit that I used to hate
My family used to buy papayas quite often back in Mauritius but as far as I can remember, I had always hated papayas when I was still in Mauritius. I used to watch my youngest sister eat papayas and I couldn’t understand her love for that fruit. I used to find the smell and taste of papayas disgusting.
Apart from papayas, there was no other fruit that I hated. Then I went off to study in Shanghai and during my 4th & last year there, I bought a papaya one day. I don’t even know why I bought that papaya.
To my surprise, it didn’t taste as bad as I remembered it to be. I even drank papaya milkshake once.
I bought 2 papayas a couple of days ago at Fairprice. My first 2 papayas in Singapore!
They were S$1.80 each. I felt like buying the papayas because my sisters were both telling me that they have been eating papayas everyday.

The two papayas that I’ve bought. There weren’t many left at Fairprice and I just chose two which seemed okay. I have no idea how to choose a good papaya.

These papayas are from Hong Kong? hmm.

Photo taken after cutting the papaya in half. I hadn’t removed the seeds yet. According to my sisters, this papaya looks a lot like the Solo papaya that they love because of the orange red color of the flesh. I was like “Solo papaya? What’s that?”. haha
Guess what ? I didn’t have dinner that day and ate one whole papaya by myself.
I was sitting in front of the laptop with the two halves of the papaya on a plate in front of me and a spoon while watching a show. I somehow managed to eat both halves. I should have put one half in the fridge. argh.. See the photo where it’s written that it’s from Hong Kong? It’s also written that the net weight is 1.0 kg. Minus away the skin and the seeds, there’s still a lot left. I didn’t eat anything else for dinner. The papaya was more than enough. ah… and it was really good.
Sweet but not too sweet. I haven’t eaten the other papaya yet. I’m keeping it for the weekend.
I’ve sent the photos to my sisters via MSN and they were surprised that I’ve bought papayas. Not one but two big papayas.
They both said that they thought I hated papayas. Yes I did but that was when I was in Mauritius. ![]()
Hmm.. I can’t think of any fruit that I hate now. I love fruits.

I like papaya too, but I’ve eaten very little this year even though we have a tree in the back yard. I kind of got fed up with this fruit, as last year I ate too much of it. I hope I’m about to start liking it again.
Quote?Encore le manger :O eh bein, I interact with food only for 40 minutes each day … quick in the kitchen, quick to eat …
dont have much time to waste
Quote?Oh dear, papaya is another fruit that I don’t like! I have never tasted papayas but I don’t like the smell and the appearance.
The dark seeds remind me of disgusting insect eggs… although usually eggs are not dark! Hahahha!
As you may know, another fruit that I don’t like is banana. Same problem as with papayas. I don’t like the smell! But the appearance is ok. LOLL!
Quote? When I was a kid, I used to eat bananas and according to my mom, I liked that. I don’t know how I came to stop eating bananas
I loove papayas, but they are so expensive in Canada… don’t eat them that often. It’s a picturesque fruit too ;-)
Quote? At first glance at your first photo, I thought they were mangoes instead of papayas!
Papaya used to be my least favourite fruits too. That was years ago! I love them now. A couple of months ago I used to eat papaya everyday. I wanted to buy some during the weekend but I saw other fruits instead
I’m definitely going to buy some this weekend! I prefer to eat them alone and not in smoothies. The husband prefers them in milk smoothies and doesn’t really like papayas if eaten just like that alone.

You have never eaten Papayas?
As for bananas, I like banane zinzli hehe..

They’d love to have a papaya tree. I think we only have a mango tree in our unused land opposite our house.
Quote?My sisters will be jealous!
@ Bruno,
You don’t sound like someone who enjoys food. I’m never too busy to enjoy food.
Quote?@Angele,
I’m shocked. When I was in Mauritius, I didn’t like the smell of papayas but I still tried to eat papayas. It was only then that I decided that I didn’t like papayas. I had to try first to be sure.
:P Now I finally like papayas so maybe one day you’ll like them too. Maybe.
ah.. and I love bananas. How can you not like bananas? awwwwwww.
Quote?You have NEVER eaten papayas?
@Zhu,
Quote?I guess that the papayas in Canada are all imported. That’s why they are so expensive.
@Carine
They sell some vegetables and fruits down there opposite the HDB. I will have a look during the weekend.
Quote?Speaking of mangoes, I’m still looking for green mangoes. I haven’t been to the wet market yet. In fact, I don’t even know where the nearest wet market is.
@ Carine
Quote?I like bananas but somehow I’m not too fond of ‘banane zinzli’.
i just hate this fruit … never liked to eat it .. however, my mum has never bought a papaya koz we got 2-3 trees in the garden.
Quote?Carine and Aline,
Aline,
It’s so weird, right? I used to have no problem eating bananas when I was little. Now I can’t even stand the smell of bananas, especially if it’s very strong!
Quote?I don’t know why I don’t like bananas anymore
what about papaya chips ?
Quote?@ David,
Quote?I’ve never seen papaya chips before.
@ Yusha,
Quote?Morinn has a papaya tree and you have 2-3 trees? wow. You can sell the papayas.
i hate papaya but i love ‘banane zinzli’ sometimes i go to Winners only to buy two ‘bananes zinzli’
Quote?I’ve never like this fruit and still don’t like it. I’ve eaten a few slices here and there, but have never been fond of it. We have always have papapa trees in the yard. They tend to take over if you let them.
