I got quite alarmed when I saw that my blog got nominated for Mauritian Blog of the Year 2008 organized
by another Mauritian blogger. I requested to have my blog removed from the list and I’m still waiting. What’s so alarming about that? Well, I don’t like my blog to be listed anywhere where many Mauritians might be visiting. One thing I noticed is that apart from 2 Mauritian blogs I’ve been reading, I don’t know the other bloggers. Ah.. and most of them seem to ‘know’ each other and are currently in Mauritius. To me it feels more like a local Mauritian Blog of the Year contest. I know some Mauritian bloggers who are overseas and who have been blogging for a long time but none of them were nominated for that Mauritian Blog of the Year thing. The ‘newer’ bloggers know each other and the ‘older’ bloggers know each other I guess.
All this got me thinking about the good old days..

I wrote about Mauritian bloggers back in 2004. (See old entry written on 19th August 2004 -> Mauritian bloggers. )
Like I mentioned in my About page,
Why this blog?
I tend to bottle up my feelings. Writing is the only way to make me feel better…
This blog also allows me to let my loved ones know what I’ve been up to.

They are still the 2 main reasons why I write here. (Also, maybe Email and blogging, Getting in touch with old friends as well.)
Most of the bloggers from back then have stopped blogging by now, some are on hiatus but a few are still updating their blogs. I’ve been on hiatus a couple of times already and I don’t update my blog as often as I did a few years ago but my blog is still alive even if I only update it when I feel like it.
I don’t maintain a list of Mauritian bloggers anymore and I have to admit that I don’t keep track of what’s going on back in Mauritius. At some point ( I don’t remember anymore. Maybe around year 2006?), there were more and more Mauritians blogging. I got an email from Stephane who was asking me if I was interested in having my blog syndicated in the Mauritius Blog Tracker. I said yes. That was on the 9th April 2006. On the 24th April 2006, I emailed him because I wanted to have my blog removed.
What I wrote in my email back then :
***
Hi!
I’m sorry but I’ve changed my mind about being tracked. I’ll be keeping the link to the Mauritius blog tracker because I enjoy reading some blogs tracked there but I’d rather not see my full entries(plus photos) over there.
It just feels too weird. I didn’t write with the intention of having Mauritians read my entries. As you may have noticed, some of my entries are like journal entries, i.e kinda personal and detailed. Most of my blog readers are people I’ve met in China or know online. Mauritius is a small country and gossips spread like wildfire. I hope you understand this and delete my entries there. (not to mention that linking directly to my photos might bother my friend who’s hosting me).
Thanks

Now, more than 2 years after I asked to have my blog removed from the tracker, my feelings still haven’t changed. I’ve just visited the Mauritius Blog Tracker website and I noticed that the list of Mauritian blogs listed there has become longer. (Of course, not all Mauritian blogs are listed there.) I think it’s great that so many Mauritians are into blogging now. I’ve been reading a few Mauritian blogs from the Mauritius Blog Tracker but still, I can’t help missing the old Mauritian bloggers. I wonder what they are up to and why they stopped blogging.

Anyway, good luck to those participating in this Mauritian Blog of the Year.

The blogger organizing the Mauritian Blog of the Year finally removed my blog from the list. Hurray. :P

And I’m kinda “disgusted” that about everybody is trying to do comics out of their pics. Whenever I go onto a Mauritian blog, I find a pic with a bubble text. pfff…copycats! :P
hey Aline, your reasons to blog, especially the first one, are pretty much similar to mine! are you an introvert as well?

    Merry X-mas!

    Hi Aline…
Well, I miss them too, like LaSh, James, Aadil.
LaSh seems to be a bit lazy, as for James, he is still under construction lol.
I met Aadil a few weeks(or months) ago, and he made another site, got to look for his link.
Among the old bloggers still blogging : Lady A, Avinash M, Eddy Y, Stephane L, Asvin and a few others.

The boost of blogging in Mauritius is both good and bad.
Good since more and more people are discovering this medium of communication to express themselves, bad because sometimes there are simply nonsense on certain blogs.
However, I try to select the articles and above all, try to promote blogging…

Wish you a merry xmas, n happy new year 2008,
    Hope that I win :) lol…

Cheers for blogging, both local and international lol.

    Hi Aline.
Things have indeed changed. I remember the like of james, carine, you..etc…It was at this time that I got the blogging virus I think.
Me too I have this problem. i am afraid of gossip..surtout a Maurice :D
That is why I keep my blogging at a minimum..Only when I need to voice my feeling.

Hehe I do check your blog from time to time because of the link on my blog.

Waz, I used to be an extrovert when I was a kid but with time, I am becoming more and more like an introvert, esp ever since I was 15. I exhibit tendencies of both groups so I’m more of an ambivert now.
Merry Christmas to you too. :) :flowers:

Yashvin, I don’t know what LaSh has been up to but James seems busy with his new life at university. I hope that they make a comeback soon. :) I miss reading their blogs and the blogs of the other Mauritians who have stopped blogging.

Some of the new blogs are simply plagiarizing other sources. I guess that the persons who did that just wanted to find something to put in their blogs even if it is nonsense. I only read about 8 Mauritian blogs regularly. I’m always on the lookout for Mauritian blogs but only a few of them make me want to go back for more.
Like you said, Cheers for blogging, whether local or international. :)
Thank you. Merry Christmas and a happy new year 2008 to you too. :) :flowers:

Josh, Those were the ‘good old times’. :) I have a link to your blog too (in my Links page) but you haven’t been updating much these days. I’ve been like that too, blogging on and off, sometimes updating after a month. I think it’s a phase many bloggers go through at least once. Now I’ve just subscribed to all the blogs in my Links page using Google reader. I wonder why I didn’t do it before. :faint:

I don’t like my blog appearing elsewhere too but that’s because I have always tried to avoid the limelight. :P

Merry Christmas to you. I am spending it at home nursing a strained muscle or two, and a bad cough.

I’m among the old Mauritian bloggers who update from time to time. I really miss the “good old days” too. Most of my blog readers are foreigners and I like it better that way… for the same reason as you, too much of gossiping and “veille zafer dimoune”!

Last but not least… I’m wishing you a merry christmas

Raymond: I know what you mean. :)
thanks. Merry Christmas to you too. ouch. Did you try taking the ‘pi pa gao’ syrup? I think it’s supposed to be good against coughs.

waz: lol. I wish I could read minds.

Win: ki futur mari? -_- :P
I added you to my google reader too. Looks like you have been updating quite often these days. :P

Angele: yeah, trop ‘veille zafer dimoune’ . lol
thanks and Merry Christmas to you too. :)

    Akash

Here’s what the blogger who organised the contest sent me in an email recently… no wonder Mauritian bloggers have been tagged with this sort of reputation. Some of them are just full of shite.

“Thank you participating in what I wanted you to participate. It was all about blackhat and keyword hijacking. Hope you got to know what I mean? Its a long time investment. Not one for the immediate effect. Your PR5 shall be worthless while we become what we want real soon with the project we are working on. Got nothing against you personally Mr ‘Akash’ and worry not as I already know more than you even know about you. Everything from your full name to your detailed university transcript. **cough** And hope you understand our quite different way of competing. **cough**

The name Kurt Avish and Tewin Sham are just decoys. lol. You ever heard a family name of Avish? Does not exist. You ever heard a first name Tewin? Does not exist. Atish Nirmalsingh? Sure he is in India. Maybe you missed my other names: Atish Nirmalsingh and Metahackers. lol. These are the names I use. The first one being the blogger. The second one being the supposed to be official one on registration pages, the third being the one used for very risky places and the fourth is the one you will only hear on websites you shall never be.

While I made a small time advertisement for you, I also made a long time investment for ‘The Project’ and you shall see the results on your own search terms in some months. While I let you comment using your site’s link, you could not notice it was a no-follow so in no way to increase your PR **cough** And will alway be a no follow but I even got your full name as keyword being repeated so much. Thats exactly what I wanted as I did made some search on google trend before doing this.

For the fact: I am doing 3rd year for Computer Science and Engineering and not Information Systems as mentioned on my profile of your site **cough**

Nice competing with you buddy. While you waste your time doing exactly what I want you to do, I am doing what you are not thinking to do.

    Regards
Kurt Avish Tewin Sham Atish Nirmalsingh
    Metahackers? **cough**”

That’s as far as their mentality goes. Keyword hijacking, copypasting, character assassinations… you name it. A self-styled “programmer” desperate for fame, this guy’s sick. I can’t believe he’s organising that contest!

Anyway I just hope there aren’t too many like him out there.

    Love reading your posts Aline.

NB: Sorry if my comment’s a bit too long for your liking.
