I upgraded my wordpress 2.3.3 to 2.6.3 yesterday. I love the new wordpress and I’m really looking forward to wordpress 2.7 which is supposed to be released in November. It’s the first time that I’ve gone so long without upgrading. The spam comments have accumulated and I haven’t deleted them yet. Right now, my wordpress dashboard is telling me that I have 8,503 comments awaiting moderation. Almost all of these are spam and I have to delete them. However, it might just happen that 1 or 2 of those comments are not spam so I’ll have a quick look at each page before I delete and hopefully it won’t take me too long to clear this mess.
I deleted everything. Deleting from the Comments page would take hours because I can only delete 20 comments at a time. I hence deleted directly from the database. It didn’t take long. :)

Do you use Akismet? If not you should install it immediately. If anything does get passed it the comment will end up in the moderation queue. That usually happens if the Akismet servers are busy. You can always rereun Akismet against your moderation queue to look for spam again. That should leave you with no spam or very littl to go through manually.

I was happy to upgrade to 2.6 myself. The plugin updater is a great feature.

    Akismet is the key.

I still get about 50 spams / day but they are blocked. It saves a lot of time and Akismet is rarely wrong.

no idea . I was sick of deleting spam so I just let them accumulate. After 4 months, I finally decided to delete all of them. I hope I won’t get so much spam in the future.
