August 15th, 2008Local ice cream
During my first week in Shanghai back in 2004, I was buying ice cream everyday, sometimes 2 or 3 times a day too. They don’t sell red bean ice cream, ‘zong zi’ ice cream, green tea ice cream, green peas ice cream, etc in Mauritius. Of course, the more ‘normal’ ice creams are also sold in China but I love trying all the different kinds of ice cream.
Eventually (and for obvious reasons), I cut down my ice cream intake to one or two per week but I still love ice cream. ![]()
Now that I’m in Singapore, I have to try the local ice cream! hehe. When I was at Orchard road with Desmond,Ah ting, their aunt and little Jack, I saw many ice cream sellers. It’s a bit difficult not to notice them. ![]()

People queuing up to buy ice cream.

The different flavors available. People can choose waffle biscuit or even sliced bread. I’m not sure if the cones are also available. Everyone seems to be buying the waffle biscuits so I opted for that one too. I wonder what it’s like to have ice cream between 2 slices of bread.

The seller is preparing my ice cream. He took a long bar of ice cream, cut a piece from it and then put that piece between two waffle biscuits.

I chose yam ice cream.
I love it. It looks simple but tastes so good. I’d like to try the sweet corn or durian ice cream next.

I once tried ice cream between slices of bread in Toronto
. I had the choice either to have the bread plain or toasted. Hehe… took the toasted one ’cause they sprinkled sugar on the bread and in the end, it made the slices slightly sweet and crunchy. And with ice cream in between… yummyummm.

Try the ice cream stand just outside Takashimaya (Ngee Ann City Shopping Centre), beside the traffic junction leading to Paragon shopping centre.
They serve one of the best homemade ice creams ever for $1-$1.50. And likewise, you can have them in a cup, in between waffle biscuits, or in sliced bread - and you can mix and match too!
Oh, and in the event you happen to be lurking around the National Museum/Bras Basah area, maybe we can meet!
My school (Singapore Management University) is just nearby.
