December 7th, 2007International Students Building 1- Canteen food
It’s getting colder and colder. Instead of going out to eat lunch, my friends and I have been eating in the canteen, or rather, right outside the canteen because there were no more seats available inside. I don’t like the canteen food much and took a few pics to blog about but now that I look at the pics, I realize that the food doesn’t look that bad.
What we had :

My friend was already eating his food when I yelled Stop. Oops.

What my other friend had for lunch.

That’s what I had for lunch. I like the round ball on the left. Apparently, it is called rou yuan or shizi tou. As for the brownish thing on the right, I have no idea what it is called. I didn’t dare to try it before but my Japanese friend told me that it tastes good.
My verdict: a bit too sweet (cooked by Shanghainese people after all….) but good.
I was going to put my camera in my bag but my Japanese classmate started to make silly faces at me. I was too slow (was laughing!) and only snapped his pic when he made that V sign. ![]()

It almost looks like knotted dried bean curd sheets to me. My mother in law cooks them whenever we can get them at the store. You “stew” them for a while and they soak up all the good flavors. Yum!
Quote?i liked the “shizi tou” and the “fanqie chaodan” when i was in tongji, but sometimes the tastes differed, and then i promised not to buy them anymore but each time, they came back in my plate…lol….ahhhh…the tongji food haha…thats what i ate for lunch …

Rosemary: ah .. the famous fanqie chaodan.
Actually canteen food is not that bad. It’s still edible. Just the crowd and hygiene can turn people off sometimes. But of course, if you had seen how the Chinese students eat, you will soon realise they never really like canteen food. They gorge the food down, every mouthful is like a torture to them. Maybe on their right hand or left hand, they hold some books, to remove some of the pain in the tasteless monotonous eating.
Anyway, I just drop by to say hi. I am also a foreign student here in Shanghai, in Fudan University. I just wonder, since you are in Tongji(I hope its the main campus), do you think its possible you start off a help program for those foreigner studying there who is in need of internship?
Internship possibilities is sourcing for a 3D rendering architecture design company nearby Tongji Siping Road. Very ideal for those in Business program or Interior Design. If you think you can find people who will be interested let me know. I am doing this for a friend out of pure friendship. Thanks!

(Sorry I have been away so long.)
But… why must you STILL continue to post pictures of food? Do you still wish to torture me or something?
Quote? What does a canteen meal cost there?
Quote?Even the cheapest slices of bread with a slice of ham or something is pretty pricey. Let alone hot meals.
Miel: will contact you by mail.
More food pics to come…
Kenneth: Usually between RMB 5 and 7. Less than 1 USD.
Quote?Kyle: Euhhh … hehe
