Yesterday Rosemary, Joanne and I went out after class. We walked for quite a long time and just when we were about to go back, we saw those two people selling food on the pavement.
We saw a girl who had just bought something from them and she was eating from a bowl. When we got closer, we saw that the board in front of the ‘tricycle’ had 八宝粥, 水果羹 written on it.

ba bao zhou and shui guo geng seller

Rosemary and I wanted to try the 八宝粥 (ba bao zhou, Eight Treasures porridge). The woman told us that it’s RMB 1 for a bowl and we didn’t hesitate any longer and took out RMB 1 each. So cheap for such a big portion! :P We had 八宝粥 before but only the type sold in supermarkets at about RMB 3. This one looked a bit different.

I started eating and remembered that I have my camera in my bag. Joanne took this pic for me.

After that, I took a few pics of my portion of 八宝粥. I don’t know what that orange thing is. It tasted okay.

I pushed the orange thing to the bottom and took another pic.

A closer look. The white thing seems to be made of glutinous rice.

The 八宝粥 was good. :D Unfortunately, the portion was too big for me and I couldn’t finish it all. I only managed to finish 2/3. The 八宝粥 might not look as nice and colorful as the ones I usually buy at the supermarket but I love the taste. (homemade taste and not as sweet as the ones sold in supermarkets)

It was my first time around that place. I have no idea if the seller is usually there. Still, I took a few pics of the surroundings so as to remember the place. I find it difficult to find certain places sometimes.
Taking pics always help. hehe

I took pics of the middle school found on the opposite side of the road. (Name and address of the middle school: 上海同济初级中学 ,上海市杨浦区政通路260号)

My first pic was too dark and the color of the building looked weird.

I took two more pics.

Now I’m sure (okay maybe 99%) that I can find that place again.

I buy food on the streets sometimes. It’s a risk to take because you never know how clean the food actually is. As you can see, the two persons in the first pic are wearing gloves so I guess the food is alright. :P

hehe yeah, I’ve recovered from my stomach problems. Now I can eat whatever I want to! :D

They look pretty suspicious to me, look at the picture Joanne took. Behind you (in the pic) they seem to have an up-to-no-good smile.

    Hi there,

I live in Australia, unfortunately, one cannot buy food on the streets here. We have strict laws about that sort of things. However, your pic did remind me of my trips to Mauritius, where the kind of foods you can buy on the streets corners are endless. I miss that very much.

Well, I do cook a lot of Mauritian foods. My favourites are chicken curry, Dhall pouri, and Pharata (bread like) just to name a few.

Tell me do you cook Muaritian foods regularly and if so where do you get your recipes?. And finally, have you been to Mauritius?.

    A friend from Down Under,
    Desiree.

P>S>…That stuff in the pic, what is it made of???

We have 八宝粥 in our cafeteria and it is also 1 yuan per bowl. it tastes okay but a little too sweet.

My friends and I often buy food on the streets. We like eating by the stands. Sometimes we eat while walking. It is not a good habbit but we simply like it…

Hey, you look great in the picture!

Since you don’t know ‘pinyin’, try saying ‘pa pao cho’ .
pa as in papa, pao as the pao you see in Mauritius…the Chinese steamed buns, cho as in… lol… dunno what…maybe as in ‘choto mate’(jap)
It’s the closest I can come up with for the time being. haha

hehe yes, it is yummy. Unfortunately I won’t be making it. It’s easier to just buy it since it’s so cheap and I’ve never made it before. hehe

Well I am from Mauritius so I guess that answers your question about whether I’ve been to Mauritius.:) I’m now studying (university) in Shanghai. I’ve been in Shanghai since Sept 2004 and I went back to Mauritius in 2005 for my summer vacation. Not sure when I’ll go back again. The plane ticket is kinda expensive since there is no direct flight to Mauritius from Shanghai. I have to go to Hong Kong first then fly to Mauritius from there.
About cooking Mauritian food, I rarely cook here (lack of time and cooking skills..hehe) but as you can see from the food category on my blog, there are some entries with photos of Mauritian food that my friends and I made and ate in Shanghai.
You aren’t Mauritian? I think that it’s great that you cook Mauritian food sometimes. For recipes, you might already know about this website but here it is:

    LaSh:
Even though I ate it, I am unable to tell you all the ingredients in that particular bowl of ba bao zhou. :P See Stella’s comment. :) I’d like to add that there was also red beans in it. Since ba bao zhou means Eight Treasures porridge, apart from the sugar, there are 8 ingredients in it.
    Jeff:
Welcome back to the blogging world. :)
