October 1st, 2006Dinner with Mauritians in the area
Yesterday night, we made faratas and a few fillings. The last time I ate faratas was months ago.
This time , it was dinner with only the Mauritians from Tongji University and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. Only Jean Paul wasn’t there. He isn’t in Shanghai right now. My bf came when we were done eating but we kept some food for him. Still, faratas should be eaten when they are still warm.

We ate in Rosemary’s room while watching Click (funny movie but I got a bit teary at some point)

hi,
You have been tagged!
see here
I’m not epxert fro that region but that food looks similar to Indian food… perhaps Mauritius location in the indian ocean has to do with it?
Most intriguing is the plastic sheet you have on your table. I’ve seen this done in Hong Kong…. lay out a very very thin plastic sheet, eat, and when done, you wrap everything up and throw it in the trash. Common practice in China too?
This is because many people in Mauritius are of Indian descent. However, the food isn’t completely similar to what they cook in India because we use spices made in Mauritius and the way of cooking isn’t 100% the same. The first filling we cooked isn’t something Indian though.
I talked a bit about it the last time we made rotis and faratas.
Mauritius is in the Indian Ocean but it’s very far from India, closer to South Africa. Anyway, you need to understand the history of Mauritius to understand the cuisine.
About the plastic sheet, it’s the first time we used it here. It’s not in our habit. My friend left Shanghai not long ago and left a few things in my possession. A bag containing such plastic sheets were among them. We decided to use them. Still, the way I’ve seen them being used in China (usually for parties/big dinner) is : eat but use things like plastic cups, plastic forks & plates, etc… After eating, just wrap up and throw everything away .
The food sure look nice.Feeling hungry now.
I was just going to say you are missing the descriptions of each dish, until I read your response to comment #3.
Did you ever think about putting together a Mauritian Cookbook?
I’m hungry…recently my recipe includes only pasta and chicken rolls. What kind of sauce do you use to make all of them? That potato looks nice.
It’s nice to have some mauritian gatherings esp. in a foreign country
hehe how does ur bf find the faratas and rougaille and the rest? Liked them?
