April 18th, 2006wah… big package!
I haven’t been feeling well since Sunday night. I didn’t go to class yesterday as well as today and stayed in bed most of the time. Even my keyboard is on my bed now. I no longer have my stomach problem but I still have a headache. I get dizzy spells too.
My friends have come to see me in my room on both days and that really made me happy. I feel loved. It’s good to know that some people really care for me.
Even if I don’t have much of an appetite now, I feel better. Yesterday was horrible.
I had a boiled egg and a steamed bun this morning and nothing for lunch. I just had a very light dinner too. That’s all that my stomach can take right now. Still, it’s better than not being able to eat anything at all.
Another thing which brightened my day is the 9.5kgs package which I’ve just received from my sister who sent it to me via James. James is currently in HK for his Easter holidays. (James, millions of thanks!! I wonder if you had a hard time carrying all that stuff to the post office.)
Like a friend said upon seeing the package, it came at the right time.

The box contains mostly foodstuff from my parents’ store : spices which I haven’t found in Shanghai yet(real Indian curry powder, Halim spices, Tandoori spices,etc..), little snacks which I like, desiccated coconut, vanilla essence, almond essence, caramel essence, glacé cherries, Imperial halal corned beef, my fave cheese, Twisties, doritos, chicken and mushroom fettucine twists, black lentils, basil seeds,blé concassé, dhal gram, etc. My sister gave me a bit of everything. She knows that I’m trying to improve my poor culinary skills.
I’m trying to identify what’s in the fourth pic. I’ll have to wait for my sis to come online to ask her.

ah yes, I got After Eight mint chocs from James! Those are one of my fave chocs. 谢谢
I’ll try not to finish everything too quickly.
My sister also gave me some accessories. Some of these are Indian bangles.

I already have many sets of Indian bangles but I don’t have blue ones.
It’s not that I can’t get all of that in Shanghai. I saw Indian bangles in an Indian store in Shanghai some time ago. One bracelet was around RMB5 whereas in Mauritius a whole set of around 20 Indian bracelets can cost RMB15 to RMB30.
When it comes to food and spices, I haven’t been to the big Carrefour in Gubei yet but one thing I know for sure is that imported goods are extremely expensive in Shanghai, compared to Mauritius. Right now, I’m trying to save money so that I can go to Singapore and Malaysia during my summer hols.

PS: The delivery company sent someone to pickup the package(s). oh the 4th pic looks like tilani
or is it Pochai pills? (保濟丸)
Everytime you post pics of ordinary food from Mauritius I’m left dumbfounded.
I’ve never seen or heard of most of them. Are they mostly Indian foods? What kind of restaurant can you get this style of food?
hey…if you plan to drop by Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, do tell me. would love to meet you.
Never in my life have I ever received a parcel that big!
Seems like you have plenty of goodies in there!
My GAAAWWDD, u lucky chick!! all those spices. *drool drool drool* hey the goodies weren’t checked by custom!? I got checked just by bringing 50 pairs of dholl pooris & Coutchia lol. the 4th pic, didn’t she send u freshly ground peppers? hmm…
have fun & start whipping up dishes!:)
That is a big parcel..
beautiful bracelets, I don’t wear those though, they slip off my wrist easily
hehe, i just had indian food today, chickpea curry, lentil curry and dhall, with a bit of potato curry too..:P ..also i had RoTi…woot!!
I can’t cook those food but those are the usual stuffs i get to see in Malaysia too…miss home..:)
if u get to cook lovely food with those exotic spices, do post up the recipe eh girl…
Enjoy those mints…
James, nopes it’s not ’tilani’. It does look like the pills you mentioned but it can’t be pills because it was in the bag with all the spices.
h2y, Sure!I would love to meet you too. If I go to Malaysia, I’ll be going to KL for sure.
Stella, hmm I don’t know . They don’t smell like ground peppers.
50 pairs of dholl pooris?? wah..so many. hehe
Well I got the parcel a bit late. It took a few more days than I had thought it would. The individual bags were not opened so I guess that they didn’t really check.
the Indian bangles are sold in different sizes. My sister bought those for me and tried them on first. We both wear the same size.
thanks!
hmm.. about recipes.. I’ll see what I can do. hehe
I hope that the food in Malaysia is good! I love eating.
Better yet, if you are in Malaysia by the time James and I go there, we can cook something for you and Elaine.
It’s really hard to say what Mauritian food is like because of the influence of so many cultures in Mauritius. Still, Indian spices are very important in our cuisine. I’ll post photos of Mauritian food soon!
What kind of restaurant? hmm…. I doubt that there’s a Mauritian restaurant where you are but I’ll say that Indian restaurants come pretty close. Maybe something like a combination of Indian,Western, Chinese and African cuisine would be even closer.
i did some kind of repacking so that everything would fit in the box… maybe it’s really the pills that have been casually packed with the spices?
hmm i still don’t think they are pills. They were in two small transparent plastic bags, the kind that is used in my parents’ store. My sis also didn’t say that she was going to send me medicine.
hey aline!!
i think that these little unidentified grains are mustard.Dont you think so??!!!
yes yes yes! hehe thanks
My sis also confirmed this.
Mustard seeds.
