February 11th, 2006anonymous call
There’s this guy who phoned me on my cellphone at 02:30 . I stared at my ringing and vibrating cellphone, wondering whether to pick up or not. The phone number was a local one. I was thinking “what the heck… it’s 2:30 a.m! ” Then the thought that maybe one of my friends was in trouble and calling me from the police station or something ( er… watched too many movies when I was younger…
) flashed across my mind and I grabbed the phone. The conversation started as follows:
aline: “喂 (wei) ?”
guy: “hello… Are you busy? ” …(bla bla bla..) ….I want to be friends with you……
aline: *silence*.. “Who are you?? Do you know that it’s rude to call someone at 2:30 in the morning?”
…………………………..etc..
I was getting impatient already. What a weirdo. He wouldn’t say his name and even told me to save his number under the name ‘unknown’ so that I know that it’s him the next time he calls. Sure, I will save the number…. *rolls eyes* so that I know it’s him the next time he calls but only so as not to answer his calls. I did my best not to sound too rude (*shrugs* too kind sometimes but I don’t believe in using foul langauge. ) and hanged up the phone shortly after.
The voice had sounded kinda familiar and I had to rack my mind trying to remember whose voice that was. By now, I have an idea who the guy might be. It’s a guy I met not long ago. He has my number because I gave it to him. grrrr… I was so stupid. I had lent him some dvds when he knocked on my door a few weeks ago, looking for my roommate. My roommate is in Beijing for the holidays and I had told the guy so. He came back minutes later, asking me if I had any dvds to lend him because he was so bored in his room. He seemed quite ‘normal’ and friendly. I didn’t think twice about it. I have so many dvds lying around. I lent him a couple and (out of politeness I guess), he insisted on lending me some dvds too. He asked me for my number so that it would be easier for him to find me and give me back my dvds. Tomorrow , I’ll give him back his dvds and ask for my dvds back. As to whether to ask him about the phone call, I thought over it and the best thing to do is feign ignorance. I don’t want to complicate things.
I can’t help hoping that he’ll come clean about it and even say that he was joking but….*shudders*

Dear Lord… if I only had 一角 for every one of those I have gotten, I’d own China.
The best thing to do is this… as soon as they speak English to you, just start saying “什么?”… “听不懂”… “你是谁!?!?!?”
It happened so much on my home phone, I unplugged it over a year ago and use it as a paperweight.
Mobile phone… and, never answer a number I don’t know. As soon as I get a call, I reply SMS in Chinese, “你是谁”, and that ususally gets rid of the people wanting to “be your friend”.
Look, I’m a friendly fellow… but, even the people who work at KFC, when they are not working, do not get people running up to them on the streets asking “Can I be your friend?”, simply to get free food from them. (Which, is exactly what it feels like when people use us for English.)
the guy sounds desperate.
hmmm i feel ‘feign ignorance’ will just say, u’re ok with the late call …
just my opinion la
Creep alert! I think you’re right to get your stuff back and make a clean getaway. That way you don’t lose your DVDs and your conscience is clear.
I don’t think I could ever be friends with somebody that felt they had to ask me to be their friend. It is usually pretty obvious if a friendship is going to grow once you talk to with somebody. If it isn’t going to happen don’t force it. Just like any relationship.
yeah. echo is right. don’t answer any calls you are unfamiliar with and do not reply to any stranger’s sms. i received some before saying that i owe some bank some money. it’s ridicules.
Last time this guy did that to me too, and my Mom answered the phone for me. It was so much fun to watch
I’ve had a similar experience before two years ago. It was via SMS, though. About some nut who wanted to know more about me and refused to reveal his identity. Until I literally “shouted” at him by typing in CAPS.
I guess there will always be wierdos like these around. If only there was a sure-fire way to deal with them.
ewwww
I hate creepy phone calls like that, i think guys get a big kick out of it. boys suck, girls rule LOL
hmm good point… need think about it.
I hate it when people ‘ask’ to be friends with me. It feels so strange, almost like the person is desperate. I prefer a frienship which starts and develops naturally.
