December 31st, 2004Snowing in Shanghai
I’ve been told that it rarely snows in Shanghai and I read that it snowed noticeably last winter on January 18, 2004 and that before that, it was in 1996. I wasn’t expecting snow this year and especially not in December. I was in class yesterday morning when a classmate said that he could see snow mingled with the rain. I had to squint for about 5 minutes before I noticed the snow. Anyone could tell that I had never seen snow before. hihi
Yesterday I went to eat huo guo with my friends after class.
Hunk and Heidi,a Danish couple.

Right after eating (nearly 3pm) , we stepped out of the restaurant and it was snowing. Light snow but still , SNOW. I was pretty excited. I kept taking pics even if it was getting colder and colder. My hands were all red. I put on my gloves after a while but it still felt cold. I hate the wind. brrrrrr.
Some people were riding their bicycles.

Desmond was making ice crystals.

We then went to a friend’s place and some friends played mahjong. I don’t know how to play.
I just watched them, trying to learn.

When it was time to go home, it was extremely cold outside and there was more snow. Pretty. Cold. Fun.
The guys made some snowballs and tried to hit each other. We had fun despite the cold. ![]()

A snow-covered car

Photos taken in Tongji University:
Snow covered bicycles.
I kept thinking of those poor people having to ride those bicycles the next day. ![]()

It’s no longer snowing today but it’s extremely cold. The temperature is -3 to 1 degrees.
Now here are some pics taken today, 31st December :

With some of my classmates.

Having fun & also trying not to slip.

One of my teachers, Yu laoshi.

Snow-covered flower.

I like this pic.

I found this small snowman in the garden. I don’t know who made it but looking at the materials used for decorating the snowman, I guess that person must have improvised a lot.

Snow in front of International Students Building No. 2

Photo I took of Rosemary, another Mauritian studying in my uni.

Photo I took of Joanne, the other Mauritian in my uni. We are only 3 from Mauritius studying in Tongji University at the moment. Joanne and Rosemary have helped me a lot since I came to Shanghai. ![]()

Quote? It snowed in Shanghai all day on Dec. 31st of last year. I didn’t take any pictures, but I did make this cool new Flash banner for the main blog page. It’s even interactive. Drag your mouse cursor over it….
You’ve never seen snow before? Wow. I actually had a snow day today… even though it didn’t start snowing until after school.
I like that picture of the snow-covered bikes and the last picture too!
Happy New Year (a little late)!
Quote? For the one and only, real and authentic huo guo aka hotpot, one must come to Chongqing, where huo guo restaurants are as common as burger joints in Meiguo.
Although it does not snow in Chongqing, the municipality claims to have the most abundant supply of blemish-free silky-skin snow-whitish girls in China. In layman’s terms, the most beautiful girls in China are from Chongqing :faint:. Some say that this fact has to do with the frequent enjoyment of all things hot and spicy, ahem hmmm
Don’t take my word for it; one must see it to believe it!
Quote?have a blessed new year aline.
wonderful photos btw. and i love the snow. i’m envious because i’ve never seen any yet. hehe. mah jong is easy once you get the hang of it. and it’s really addicting. hehe. tc!

Quote?Wah snow!! i’ve never seen snow before, tho the external ambient temperature was waving around 0 deg. I learnt to play mahjong last holiday, but after a year not play i forgot everything except the basics - a brainstorming game.
Btw, what’s huo guo? Russian food? fire fruit? hot pot? *blink*
Quote?lol nothing very impressive. looks like very light snow compared to what we have here.
hot pot is good btw. i like it
we sometimes make it at our house(me and housemates)
Quote?Compared to Canada, it IS very light snow. It rarely snows in Shanghai so to people in Shanghai, it IS a big deal.
yeah hotpot is great!I love it, especially the one in the pic. Half is normal hotpot and the other half is 辣。
Quote?hot pot.. i think they also call it tanpenlau in MU. no idea what’s the correct way to write it.
Quote?Ohhh Yay.. I found out one more thing in here!! Yeah!!

[…] such snow here in Shanghai was on Dec. 30th and 31st 2004. (Old post & pics about it here) Yesterday’s snow was heavier. Perhaps it felt that way because I was outside in the snow […]
