August 28th, 2004Will you marry me?
It seems like many people have caught the wedding bug.
Far the past two months, I’ve been hearing about weddings in Ste Croix (where I live) every week. My mum told me about this girl who’s getting married. That girl is around my age, maybe 1 year older than me. When I first learned about it, I thought “But she’s still so young!” Someone then remarked that young people rush into marriage nowadays and that rushing into marriage will lead to divorce for many couples.
I can’t imagine tying the knot at 20.
That’s far too young for me.
I was talking about marriage to a male friend the other day. He told me that the ideal age for him to get married is 27 to 30 years old. As for me, it’s after 26 or 27. I plan to get my B.A in Chinese language first. That will require 4 years. After that, maybe I’ll do my Masters and then find a job. I guess I just want stability in my life before even thinking about settling down. I have to admit that I can’t even imagine myself getting married one day. Marriage is a big step. Right now, I’m almost convinced that I’m incapable of falling in love but maybe time will prove me that I’m wrong.
I remember my mum telling me back when I was still in primary school that when it comes to marriage, parents choose partners for their children. Maybe it had been a common thing to do when my parents were still living in China more than 20 years ago but I was born in Mauritius and have been living here all my life. If I ever plan to get married, I want to choose my life partner myself.
An uncommon sight in Ste Croix:

I was upstairs and my sister told me that someone living near me was getting married that day. She kept looking out of the window and then she called out: “hey there’s a horse!!”
I thought she was kidding but still, I grabbed my camera and went to see.
For the couples out there, maybe it’s too early to think about marriage but wanna walk down the virtual wedding aisle and get hitched in cyberspace? Go there. ![]()

Hi
You are definitely right. Get yourself settled first then think of marriage. As you said, it’s a big step and therefore take in slowly. I always thought 25 was the age and I got married at 25 (+11 Months :-D).
The link you provided is cool and funny. Great stuff.
Quote?Yeah, I think so too… Marriage is definately a big thing, and is something that you should take your time to think about.
I don’t know when I will get married, right now is definately way too early, when marriage happens, is when it will happen. That’s my take on it anyway, no particular timeframe in mind. When I find that special someone and we both decide that we could live together and put up with each other til the end of the world, then that’s when I’ll marry.
I think yeah, could be mid to late 20’s, could be early 30’s. I’m not going to expect anything, if it happens, it happens. If I don’t get married, then that’s fine too. That will have been something decided upon at a later date.
Right now, not really part of my concerns, so you know. Just live life and have fun with friends

nice shot!
Quote?Ya must be happy to be in MU where those silly traditions have ceased but isn’t get married at 30 a little bit old? Oh well, the world going upside down nowadays, females can live well without need of a husbad for financial reasons.
Awesome shots!
Quote?i’ll marry you for 12 goats, 7 zebras, 2 yetis and a pair of orang utans
on a serious note … most girls i know in singapore over here marry ard 22-26yrs
Quote?the ideal age for marriage for me is around 25-28. err, i don’t even want to think about these things. school is already a heckload of problem for me.
Quote?interesting entry though!
Why bother getting married at all? I have no idea, but maybe someone can convince me of the benifits of marriage.
I have seen too many people marry the wrong person and with Mauritian life being what it is, you don’t just marry your partner, you marry their family too.
Don’t even get me started on when she/he tries to claim 50% of the assets during the divorce procedures, there are too many gold-diggers out there.
My advice, study hard, get a nice job and then if life is too good and you really want to ruin it, get married, but remember to do a pre-nuptial.
Quote?well.. why bother getting married at all? there are loads of reasons for that.. but i’ll refrain from posting it down here ‘cos i don’t want to spark any debates over here..but i reckon stephen’s comments are a tad too generalized.. or somebody’s been watching too much prime time celebrity goss tv shows..
anyway.. when i get hitched, hope it’ll be i hit the big three-zero..’cos by then, i should be financially stable and not balding yet..
Quote?Hello Aline,
when will you be leaving mu?

Will keep in touch.
Quote?Love,
Eliette
I feel the same way that you do..
Quote?Marriage is a big thing and you shouldn’t rush into it
You live in Saint Croix! Hell, it’s pretty near to where I live (near Saint Francois Church and BAT).
Quote?woah! You live quite near me then.
Quote?Stephen, You seem to feel strongly about this issue.
Quote?I’m not going to try to convince you or whatever… Maybe one day you’ll meet someone who will make you believe in this marriage stuff. Yes,in Mauritius if you marry someone,it’s as if you are marrying the family too.
12 goats, 7 zebras, 2 yetis and a pair of orang utans ? That’s all?
Quote?O, you do look pretty and certainly, it should not be a pain finding the right match. Hold on, that subject regarding marriage was only meant to be a topic and not a question literally put to users of the blog ;) Anyway, I’m only a passer by, clicking on pages, I started at moris.net, bumping here and there, before getting catapulted to your page. And I’ve identified some of those users in your friend’s list contributing every now and then to MLUG’s forum via a mailing list. I should be glad if you’re a *nix fan.
