Yesterday, I got my final documents for university. I’ll be attending Tongji University in Shanghai.
I wasn’t too happy when i read my letter of acceptance. I was hoping that I’d get Beijing Language and Culture University because I’d rather attend a small university where there are loads of foreigners and where I’m likely to adapt quickly. TongJi University is a much bigger university where they offer many other courses. I hope that I’ll like it there. I need to ask the other scholarship students where they’ll be going. They will be studying other subjects, Medicine,Fine Arts etc and all i know is that they have been admitted to other universities.
In case you don’t understand the chinese characters above, I’ll explain. I’ve been admitted to Tongji University in Shanghai as an undergraduate and I’ll be studying there for a period of 4 years (from September 2004 up to July 2008) . My chosen course of study is the Chinese language and my classes will be in Mandarin.(In some universities, they teach in both English and Mandarin. )
I got a full scholarship (study expenses, accommodation, medical expenses, teaching materials, living expenses) for the duration of my study there.
I’ve stopped working a few days ago. Just when I thought that I’ll finally get some free time to go out with my friends, to work on my site layout, reply mails, etc ,I’m gonna be busy with my application for Visa and other stuffs. I have to book my air ticket too. My uncle is going to China on September 15th and he has already booked his ticket. I think that many Mauritians travel to China during the end of August to mid-September period. Better book my ticket early. I have to reach Tongji University between the 6th and 8th of September. I’m not thrilled about the dates. I wanted to celebrate my birthday (9th Sept) in Mauritius with my friends and family. I’ll be all alone on my birthday.
Since i’ve never been to China, I asked Chen yi and Sky about it. They are both from China and know their country best. They both told me that they prefer Shanghai to Beijing. Shanghai is a very beautiful city, more beautiful than Beijing. I’m not really satisfied with this answer. I need more information about Shanghai. ![]()
Shanghai is even closer to the cities they come from, so they can easily come and visit me (or vice versa) when they go to China next year.
I’ve just read an article about Shanghai in the magazine Women of China. According to it, comparing Beijing to Shanghai, Beijing is considered to have more masculinity. Meanwhile Shanghai is a city of extreme feminity. It has been rich in two ways: Dubious but attractive stories and beautiful young women. Apparently, the women in Shanghai are different from women in other chinese cities or other countries. They have a style of their own;apart from elegance, intelligence and shrewdness, they exude a sense of mystery. At this point in the article, i was like, “this is not what i want to know” .
I really need to get more information about Shanghai before I leave Mauritius.

Interesting, but not exactly helpful information! I don’t know if this will interest you at all, but this website is pretty interesting, maybe you’ll find something there. http://www.livingontheplanet.com/asia/cn/
It’s nice that you got a full scholarship, so that you don’t have to think about that.
I’m sorry that you’re not able to be home on your birthday.. So I guess we just have to make something special for you on that day
congrats on gettin the scholarship even though not Uni of your choice. juz hav a blast these 4years ok!! i know nutz abt shanghai other than it’s famous cuisine
Yay! Congrats Aline
Oh, be sure to meet up with the RBJ member (http://cink.happyclams.net), Cink, who is also in Shanghai. I think she is over there working though, not studying! She’s a really cool person, and that’s speaking from the point of view from someone who only knows her online!
Too bad, you won’t be around when I’m in MRU… Shanghai isn’t that bad. Been there twice and it’s more developed than Beijing (my opinion). By the way, do you need to do the 1 year language course?
wow.. a full scholarship, dang..someone’s a brainiac..heh ! j/k.. Congratz Aline
Haven’t been to China myself even though my Dad was born there.. anyway now I’ve got another reason to visit China next time.. Good luck !

I’ve been to shanghai last year and it’s very nice there however people aren’t so - they are very brutal.
Congrats on the full scholarship!
I know you’ll want to know as much as possible before you go, but really you’ll learn it all when you are there, I’m sure you’ll adapt yourself fine to Shanghai, I’ve had a friend from Australia that went to work there, didn’t know the language at all, but he really enjoyed it for the 3 years he was there.
Hey Aline! It’s me Manli, u remember me? Lady*diva on MI
Well, i didn’t know u are going to Shanghai, Congratulation! and Zhu Ni yi lu shun fong!

Hello.
for your birthday.
Congrats for the full scholarship.
You should be happy, new life, new experiences…
Congrats on the full scholarship! I’ve never been to either Beijing or Shanghai, but I imagine Beijing to be more historical and Shanghai more modern, like more skyscrapers and people. Either way, I think you’ll have fun. And you can always visit Beijing on holidays or something!
I am sure you will enjoy your stay at SH (I have known quite a bit of China since I have real friends from China
All the best to you and hopefully you can make new friends at there
wow! that’s AWESOME!!! i don’t know too much about how chinese colleges work but i know for sure it’s REALLY hard to get scholarships, not to mention a full scholarship…what makes u wanna go to college in China? (you are a chinese descend? no?) wow i just think this is really cool…i know i would so fail if i try to go to school in china…..and i used to live there!!!
btw i added u to my msn…my email on there is drpepperiac
jennay: I want to go to China to study because i love the chinese language. The ideal place for me to continue with Mandarin (i studied mandarin at school) is China.
My parents are both from China but they don’t speak Mandarin. They speak hakka,a chinese dialect. They came to Mauritius more than 20 years ago. My father is now a citizen of Mauritius. In Mauritius we can learn Mandarin at school.I’ve fallen in love with the language since i was a kid. I’ve always wanted to go to China one day. I got my scholarship through the government. I think there’s an arrangement between the government of my country and that of China. 8 or 9 full scholarships are offered to Mauritians every year. One for chinese language and the others for Medicine,Fine Arts, etc
I will add you back on MSN. Hope to get to chat to you soon.
